Guilty Catholic Jeans

¡Benveñidos! (This means welcome in Spanish..) I figure this blog might somehow accomplish both staying in touch with ya’ll and documenting my life and time in Nicaragua. Hopefully, it will also offer some insight to those of you who unfortunately stumbled across this blog and are interested in learning more about life in the Peace Corps. I will plan to try and update it at least a couple of times a month. When I began reading of tarantula and scorpion season I decided it was time to stop reading other blogs and begin to focus on my own. Apparently, this obsession of reading Peace Corps blogs is something all of us future volunteers go through. I understand moving to a developing country will bring tales of critters, and while I hope to keep you updated on all things exciting in Nicaragua, I hope my stories are not overly thrilling.

Some of you have probably been expecting something like Peace Corps in my horizon ever since I got back from Argentina ill with the travel bug. For others it might be a surprise. Usually by the end of my conversation explaining my reasoning for joining the Peace Corps I have dug myself so deep into a hole that the final question is inevitable: so.. why are you doing this?  Usually this comes from the fact that I have never taken an entrepreneurship course and have pretty much lost all of my working Spanish since returning to the States amongst other things.

To get the best explanation of my reasoning to join the Peace Corps, I’ve included one of the essays from my application in the next post.

To get an even better answer, ask my friend Keavy. As she recently pointed out, I have overachieving tendencies, and this time I got myself in real deep. Damn those guilty Catholic genes. Maybe that’s why I am joining the Peace Corps. Either way, while I know it will be one of the hardest things I ever do, I know it is important for me as a person and who I want to become. Yada yada.

A couple of other things...
If at any point I start to sound like a pre-teen girl, please feel free to let me know.

Also, I’m sorry to those of you that may have stumbled across my blog hoping to find some advice to go by during the application process. I now wish that I started this blog earlier, it would have been interesting to reflect on later. Nonetheless, I hope to update the blog soon with some application materials I submitted to give you a better idea of the process I went through.
